Overview
The Business sector loosely refers to the business of the production, buying and selling of goods or services to help boost the economy. Organisations can typically be large, small, public, private or from the voluntary sector.
There are four main sectors of industry where a business can operate:
- Primary: involves mining, farming, and fishing; dealing with raw materials
- Secondary: e.g., food processing and manufacturing
- Tertiary: provides services such as transport, catering, housekeeping, reception service, warehousing, insurance services and financial services
- Quaternary: based around information and planning. Involves the use of ICT, social media etc.

Often business is associated with managing or leading a small business or managing a team in a large business. Typically, the responsibilities within a business are: Human Resources (HR), Information Technology (IT), Finance, Operations, Marketing & PR, Sales and Project Management.
At Straight A we have the apprenticeships and programmes to support these sectors and responsibilities, ranging from the Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard to Level 2 ICT Functional Skills, and including programmes such as Facilities Services, Events Assistant, Hospitality Supervisor and Digital Marketer.
